What level of difficulty am I facing …. replacing the deadbolt lock myself?

If I were to purchase a deadbolt lock at Home Depot, how hard or easy would it be for me to change it myself? I am somewhat mechanically inclinded (but not really), but I have very little experience in maintenence repairs, etc. I can read & follow directions pretty well, as far as installation instructions….

I’d prefer to avoid paying an over-inflated fee to a locksmith to do something I may possibly be able to do myself.
Also, I really don’t like it when a reapir/service person won’t even give me a ballpark figure over the phone, and yet they charge a flat-rate fee JUST TO SHOW UP. I mean…. I have made it clear that I am not looking for an exact quote–just a ballpark figure, is all.
I’d really prefer to do this myself, if possible.

My ex, whom I broke up with before I moved and has never had a key or any access or any relation to my new home, is a locksmith and walked into my house after picking the lock (we heard it on the door as it happened). He then entered both my roommate’s and my room calling out my name and looking for me. We believe he also broke the lock on the community gate to enter, but we can’t prove that.

Upon hearing his voice, I exited my room, pushed him out of the house, and called the police. They came and said that it wasn’t breaking and entering because he didn’t break the door (just picked the lock) and that because he didn’t physically harm anyone that it was a “just a trespass” and gave me an incident number.

This home invasion is part of a series of harassment/stalking incidents, including threatening phone calls and endless texts for which I also contacted the police and received an incident number. I know where my ex lives; can they not arrest him for any of this?

I know I can contact the state regarding his licensure and they might be able to do something with that, but what can I do to get him off the street? How do I press charges and get him in jail or whatever is justified? Legally speaking, what do I do next?

How to program a Scion tC key?

I have a 2005 Scion tC. Right now i am using the valet key as my only key. I went to the dealer to get a keyless entry key made, and they said they could not program it using only the valet key. (it would be $800++).

I then went to 2 locksmiths to try to get just another valet key cut, without keyless entry so i could still get into my car even if it is locked. The locksmiths said that the key had a “chip” in it and they couldn’t program it.

I was wondering if i got another key online, and went and got it cut, how would i program it to get it to work with my car.

I’m find with just a normal key (valet) but i would prefer to have keyless entry. i guess knowing how to program any type of key would be great that way i can have more than one key.

so last night i was heading out to let that car warm up as i always do and after i locked the doors i then realized that my spare key was in the glove box . basically i was locked out of my car. i called a locksmith and he wasnt far from my home. he said he could come out to take care of the problem, so i asked him could he take a check he replied yes. i knew the check wasnt going to process but i had no other choice. i live paycheck to paycheck and am not able to save anything. payday isnt till monday, so i gave him a bad check its stupid but i had no other option. i was planning on calling the guy and make up some excuse as to why it wont process and just pay him with cash on monday. how do i get out of this now ;(? i dont want to get into any trouble this is the first time ive done this and i feel horrible. i cant pay him till monday and todays friday. how do i take care of this? any advice thanks please dont judge me i just need a way out of this thanks.

Chevrolet Lumina. My son broke the key. I have both pieces of the key but they do not look like they fit together very well. Can I take the two pieces and have them make one from them or will I have to have locksmith come and make me a new key.

I also was wondering if maybe the Chevrolet dealership may be able to make one if you call and give them the vin #. It is an older model 2000 so I was wondering if anyone knew.

And maybe how much it might cost??

My lovely car is sitting on my drive useless until i can remove the barrel. My car was attempted stolen and I now need to remove the barrel and take it to a VW ealer so they can cut/program a key for me.
I have am a divorced dad of 2 girls and just cant afford to get a locksmith and/or electrician to come to me.

I’m quite mechanically/electically minded but would be very gratefull if someone could point my directly to an online sheet (haynes or something) so I can get it sorted.

I won a barrel & key from ebay a few weeks ago and then the item got ‘lost’ in the post ;(

I locked the door accidentally this morning, leaving my key on the inside of the lock (it is a Yale lock). I have a spare key, but have been told that it will not work (because the key is in the lock on the otherside.) I really need to get into my house tonight, and a locksmith is not an option because I have no money on my person. What can I do?

Will the community police be able to help at all?
The house does not belong to me personally (relatives,) so I do not feel comfortable with just breaking a window. However I do need to get inside. Will the police mind me asking them for something as trivial as this?

I’m a stupid 18 year old kid who does stupid things. When I first got the car 6 months ago, I locked myself in and tried to
open the passenger’s side door with a hanger and made it
worse. I just tried to go out for a bite to eat when I was trying to put my key in my driver’s side it wouldnt turn! It was hellaaa hard. I even hurt my fingers trying to turn the damn lock. It may have been a crackhead trying to steel my beatiful car and couldnt get IN! lol. Getting in the car without breaking a window is super hard. Not even a Professional Experienced Locksmith could open it the first time. i had to open it by calling the old owner and obtaining a copy of the keys.

Anyways. I figured that I will have to replace both locks now.
What would it cost me laborwise? I found the parts online for 55$ Bones pluz shipping & Handling. What about Labor?
Fuuuuudge this really sucks. I hadent got payed all week and when I did, this happens. :0(

Unfortunately, lost my keys including car key, last week – got set of keys made from 2 different dealers using the VIN number but neither key works so we’re assuming the ignition was changed somewhere down the line (the car is a 1998 Bonneville).
I guess now in order to drive the car, I need to change the ignition – how do I go about doing this? Someone told me to use a locksmith to take the old ignition out?
Do I need to bring the car to a dealer? (Currently at my mom’s, to go anywhere, would need to get it towed again so would prefer NOT to go this route)
Is this something I would be able to do myself (and by myself, I mean my boyfriend
Do I order the parts (ignition) online or from the dealer?
How long will this take and how much will it cost, roughly?
I know nothing about cars and have been getting mixed info from multiple people, any info would be helpful.

The rates are all about the same – between 170 and 200 dollars – to have a transponder key replaced. I am desperately looking for cheaper alternatives for this procedure and thought that buying a blank key off eBay may be able to be cut and programmed from the locksmith location. Thank you in advance for your help!
Nick, do I need to have my VIN number or anything when I take the key(s) to the locksmith? Is this how they know how to cut it and program it? Thanks so much..
Every locksmith I’ve called in the area said they can do the programming, so I don’t understand the discrepancy in answers here. The Toyo tech says only a dealer can do it?

I saw that there are websites selling “OEM” transponder keys, but my dealer said they refuse to cut or program keys ordered online because sometimes the metal of the key is “too hard” and it messes up their machine, and other times the transponder fails and they don’t want to waste time. One locksmith I called said that they can’t do keys for Nissans because the transponder needs multiple power sources to be programmed and their machine won’t do it. Are there companies out there that can program a key for a 2000 Nissan Maxima? I really want to buy a key with the remote functions built in and saw one on ikeyless.com . Locksmith locations near Denver would help most, as I heard the vehicle must be present for programming. Thanks!

Ive lost my one and only car key. Yes, very bad decision to not have the key duplicated. We have been unsuccessful in finding the key. I have read and been told that a Locksmith can help me. Im having problems shifting from park. I have been reading online about this problem all day. I recently had to have a locksmith cut apart my ignition after losing the keys. Im worried that might be part of the problem. Also I have one tail lite that is out. Sometimes after a lot of trying, I can get the car to move from park. I am trying to figure out where the manual shift lock release is but there is no key slot or any kind of button that I can see.
i took apart plastic parts around the shifter and looked for hours for a button or keyslot in the hot sun…..where else could a manual shift lock release be?

I broke my ignition key a while ago, and while I was able to get a replacement made, it wasn’t perfect. Now I have to twist and turn the key in the ignition in different ways until it finally turns in the ignition. Are there any locksmith methods that can make some kind of replacement based on the ignition lock, or will I need to get the whole thing replaced?

I’m bi and not out. A week ago, I went to a locksmith in the mall to cut keys. Whilst waiting for them, a cute girl was in line to organize her keys. There were a few other people around but everyone was just in their own world because it was sort of a long wait. I noticed her immediately and I was discreetly checking her out whilst she was on the phone and looking in her bag etc… Minutes later, we were right next to each other and facing each other as she was still in line and I was waiting next to the line. Soon after I had stopped checking her out and I don’t think she saw me doing it, she was observing me intently but with a warm look on her face. When she saw look back at her and half smile, she didn’t look away and continued looking me straight in the eyes with a half smile too and a somewhat embarrassed look on her face. I think that it was mutual attraction and my gaydar went off though initially I thought her to be straight cuz she is femme.

Anyway, last night I was browsing an online dating site, I saw her pic up and her profile said that she is interested in women. I was very excited by that….my intuition was right on about her. But the dating site doesn’t allow much connecting between users without payment (one cannot even send a msg without paying) and I can’t pay for their ‘extra’ services at this time. And apparently she doesn’t log in often to it, according to the last login date on her profile. However, I saw her on facebook as well and I want to connect with her there.

Should I just add her as a friend with no msg OR should I her msg saying that I saw her on the online dating site and ask if she remembers me from the mall by the locksmith? We didn’t actually meet but there was definitely some extended eye contact and some sort of mutual interest then. She definitely wouldn’t know me by name and I look a little different in my profile pic from how I looked in person last wk. What info should I include or leave out? What do you think?
btw…. the online dating site I saw her on is overtly connected to facebook…..so it let me know immediately that her user name is the same as her facebook name. On fb, she has put that she is interested in women so i guess she is out…

I inherited an Itoki Gold Safe Strong 88 safe from my mother and we’ve lost the combination to access it. I was thinking of contacting a local locksmith company to get a quote on how much they’d charge to open it, but I also read online that there are manufacturer combinations that you can use to open a safe, is this true?
To further clarify, I meant to say with manufacturer combinations that some people just don’t change them.

How to open my back door without a key?

I’ve lost the key to my back door. From doing a search on the internet I think it’s a mortise lock – the lock looks like this, and is locked with a similar type of key as the one in this picture: http://www.sz-wholesale.com/uploadFiles/060325102137s.jpg – I’m a bit broke at the moment and would rather not have to pay to get a locksmith in – it’s not important that I unlock this door as I don’t use it very often; in fact the only reason I’d like to be able to open the door is for easier access to my back garden to take the bins out once a week. Bit of a pain having to go the long way round, through the front door! Is there any way to get the door open (without breaking windows etc), without causing any/much damage to the door? I’ve tried using a credit card to force the lock open but the doorframe overlaps the gap between the door and frame,so it’s difficult to get the card all the way in. I can’t see whether the card is going in between the lock and frame, or just bending. Any ideas?
I forgot to say; it’s quite a new lock as I had to change them when my ex ‘messed up’ my old lock by superglueing it! He’d also tried to force the door open so as a result, the door frame is a bit chipped – there are dents in the frame around the area of the lock, and the door is a bit loose in the frame or something – you can push the door so far and rattle it. Would this help in opening the door in any way? Prising it open or something?
Yeah but I’m not even slightly mechanically minded, and would never be able to figure out how to unlock a door with a hair pin! I’d get as far as sticking the pin in the lock and jiggling it about a bit…but I doubt that’d work! And breaking the door down would be painful (I’m female, and quite slim) and expensive. I can’tr afford to get a new door at the moment…

I really need to change the locks for my cadillac 1986 sedan deville. The lock and key is messed up and wont open its a pain and I dont want to be locked out. I dont need ignition key because its a diffrent key and it works fine. Just need to change the door lock(s) and it should be pretty easy. my friend is also a locksmith and I can get sum help from him.

How can I remove or break the lock on a steamer trunk?

We have an old beat-up Hartmann wardrobe trunk with a missing key which is, of course, locked. I think it was a yard sale find. We haven’t been able to look inside to check the condition of the wardrobe drawers and whatever else might be inside, so it may just be termite fodder at this point.

Right now the lock core spins loosely in its setting and obviously others have tried, but attempts to open it ourselves have failed and this just isn’t worth enough to us to pay a locksmith.

Is there any one best way to bypass/break the lock to open the trunk? We’ve thought of just trying to drill in where the key used to go, but I don’t know whether another way might be easier (maybe prying up from under the hasp?) Any suggestions?

Should I stop a check if I think I was scammed by a locksmith?

I was locked out of my car and called a locksmith company, whose number was listed as being in the same town as me, to help. They first said it would take 20-30 min, then the serviceman called and said 45 min, but it ended up being an hour. Then, it only took him about 2 min to open the door, but he asked for $39 service charge + $110 fo some other reason I couldn’t comprehend. I didn’t know what sort of figures to expect, so I wrote hime the check. I felt it odd though that he asked for the check to be made out to him by his name, not of the company I called. Anyway, I felt bad and decided to do some research online and was shocked to see how often this happens to people. I was definitely scammed out of more money than he deserved. This happened at night, and I checked my bank’s website and found that the check I wrote hasn’t been cashed yet. He may cash it in the morning though, so should I stop the check before it’s too late. Will he come back and cause trouble?
By the way I did not get a reciept. The only form of proof I have is the carbon copy of the check I signed with his name in the “Pay to” section. I know I have to pay him something, but $150 is 3 times what I thought it should be. I’m just afraid to do something and then suffer while trying to negotiate. I would just let bygones be bygones, but I feel like until that check is cashed, I have a possibility of fixing my mistake.

The key to my apartment building is the same as the key to my apartment. My landlady says that the other people in the building can only use their keys to open the door to the building, but not to my apartment. Her exact words were “Locksmiths can key locks so that a key opens the front door and each apt separately.” Is this possible? How does it work?

i locked my keys in a rental and was shocked when the locksmith was able to unlock the car without setting off the alarm. is there an alarm that can sense that the window was pried open (even a quarter of an inch)?
I guess I didn’t turn the alarm on when I got out of the car. I’m sure I didn’t. It only caught my attention, because the alarm did go off once he unlocked the door and opened it, but not when he was sticking the hook in the window. very scary.

I lost my only key to the coin op washer machine at the apartment an there is no way i am calling a lock smith im not paying for that is there a way i can get into it by picking the lock I need to do it fast also so my tenants dont see me ass they walk by all the time. If I call a lock smith they prob closed anyway i live in ri an were gettin wacked with snow an I cant get to it till sunday morning..any help plz
